Have you ever dreamed of taking off into the wilderness, and living a life of total independence and self-sufficiency? That's what off-grid living is all about. You don't rely on power companies to turn your lights on-- you do it yourself.

Turns out one great source of power can come from the used batteries of hybrid vehicles.

To help Yellowstone National Park reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, Toyota installed a series of solar panels that charge up 208 Camry Hybrid batteries. Those batteries store the electricity generated by the panels during the day, and can release it to the buildings at an even rate over night.

There are millions of hybrid cars on the road today, and eventually those batteries will need to be retired. When they do, there is a massive potential for them to lead second lives as a power source anywhere grid power is not available.
